City gates and walls are ancient defensive structures built to protect the cities. There are some original intact city walls and gates in China. The other cities have re-constructed or remains of the former ancient structures and they are listed according to the prefectures they are located.

Guangzhou Baihegang Fort

One of 7 Qing dynasty era forts in Changzhou Island built between 1883-4 during the Sino French War. The forts were dismantled by the Japanese in 1938. This is one of two of two forts still intact.

The fort was constructed in 1717 to guard access to Pearl River. There used to be a left and right fort with 12 guns. This is the only remaining fort.

The costal defence fort was built in 1891 during the Sino-Freench war. It is one of four well known modern forts in China. The other three are the Humen Fort in Guangzhou, Dagu Fort in Tianjin and Wusong Fort in Shanghai.
