Macao is the first colony in Asia when Portugal started administering the island in 1557 and the last when it was handed back to China in 1999. The Historical city centre is an UNESCO World Heritage site.
The fortress was built between 1617 to 1626. It successfully held off the Dutch invasion in 1622.
